The African Union just made AI part of its peace and security conversation. That's a big deal.
Ethiopia's Prime Minister is now officially Africa's AI Champion. The AU’s Peace and Security Council held its first real AI briefing. Things are shifting at the institutional level. It's slow, sure, but you can actually see it happening.
When the African Union Peace and Security Council takes the time to discuss artificial intelligence, you know AI has moved past just tech circles. Now, it’s a national security issue. That happened this week, and it's worth watching.
The Council got briefings on AI governance, peace, and security. They talked about everything: how AI is changing military intelligence, and even how technology can fuel violence against women. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed got confirmed as the AU's AI Champion—a title decided at the AU Summit earlier this year. Ethiopia’s AI Institute is also stepping up, turning into a leading player for the continent, and the Council visited it as part of their agenda.
One thing that really stands out: Africa’s push to have a louder voice at global AI regulatory bodies. Right now, all the rules are coming from places like Washington, Brussels, and Geneva. But those rules decide what AI looks like in cities like Nairobi, Lagos, and Accra—sometimes without any African input. The AU is starting to realize that simply following rules made elsewhere puts them at a disadvantage.
Here’s the reality: "The rules being written in Brussels will shape AI in Nairobi. Africa needs a seat at that table before the ink dries."
The AU also wants its members to make sure women and youth aren't just added into AI policy and conflict prevention because it looks good—they actually want it to be a built-in requirement. With Africa’s population being the youngest in the world, and with its female tech talent growing fast, it’s not about charity. It’s just smart policy. Institutions like the AU move at their own pace, but they are moving—and that matters.
