Nairobi Faces Commuter Crisis as Fuel Price Hike Sparks Alleged Strike Threat

Nairobi is staring at a possible commuter crisis after reports emerged alleging that matatu operators are planning a 50 percent fare increase following the latest fuel price review announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The reports, also allege that matatu operators could stage a nationwide strike on Monday, May 18, over the sharp rise in fuel prices that has pushed operational costs to record levels.

According to the latest EPRA review, petrol prices increased by KSh 16 per litre while diesel rose by approximately KSh 46, marking one of the steepest fuel adjustments in recent years. The increase has triggered concern among commuters, transport operators, and small business owners already struggling with the rising cost of living.

If implemented, the alleged 50 percent fare hike would significantly affect Nairobi commuters, with routes that previously charged KSh 100 potentially increasing to KSh 150 overnight.

Transport stakeholders claim the rising diesel prices are making it difficult for public service vehicle operators to sustain normal operations. Some reports further allege that operators are considering demonstrations and possible road blockades along major highways, including Thika Road, Jogoo Road, and sections of the Nairobi Expressway.

The uncertainty surrounding the reports has already created tension among commuters across the city, with many expressing fears of transport disruptions at the beginning of the new week.

The fuel price increase is also expected to have a ripple effect across various sectors of the economy. Traders warn that transportation costs could drive up food prices, while boda boda riders say the higher fuel costs may reduce customer demand due to increased fares.

Government officials have attributed the fuel adjustments to global oil market pressures and international shipping disruptions, although many Kenyans continue to express frustration over the persistent rise in the cost of living.

As of Friday evening, no official communication had been released confirming whether the alleged nationwide strike will proceed on Monday.

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as Nairobi residents prepare for possible transport disruptions in the coming days.
