Kenya's Demographic Transformation Forum Highlights Youth Innovation and Economic Growth

The National Council for Population and Development NCPD in collaboration with Women Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) Policy & Systems, funded by UK–Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and implemented by Palladium, coordinated a high-level leadership meeting on "Demographic Transformation and Kenya’s Future". The meeting brought together public and private sector leadership to advance a shared understanding of global and national demographic transformations and their implications for Kenya’s future and sustainable development.

The forum, held on March 11 to March 12, 2026, brought together policymakers, youth leaders, civil society groups, and private sector representatives under the theme “Demographic Transformation and Kenya’s Future.” On Day 2 of the event, a panel discussion set the tone for the dialogue, featuring Kwame Owino of the Institute of Economic Affairs, digital entrepreneur Eddie Butita representing SpM Buzz, Alphonce Juma from Oracom Group, Joyce Njogu representing Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Samuel Tiriongo from Kenya Bankers Association and Maurice Otieno of Baraza Media Lab. Also present among the participants was Kevins Randiek of Brand K Integrated Marketing & Communications Ltd. Discussions focused on how Kenya can harness its demographic changes to drive sustainable development and economic growth.

Kenya’s Youth Population at the Centre of Growth

Participants noted that Kenya has one of the youngest populations in Africa, presenting both opportunities and challenges for national development. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that a significant portion of the population is made up of young people, making investments in education, healthcare, and skills development critical.

Speakers emphasized that empowering young people with the right skills and opportunities could allow the country to tap into what economists refer to as a demographic dividend, a concept widely discussed in development research by organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations Population Fund where a large working age population drives economic productivity and innovation.

Panel Explores Policy, Media and Private Sector Roles

During the discussion, Kwame Owino highlighted the importance of stable economic policies that encourage business growth and create employment opportunities. He stressed that strong institutions and predictable policy frameworks are essential for attracting investment and supporting job creation.

Eddie Butita spoke about the growing influence of the digital economy and the creative industry in generating employment for young people. According to him, digital platforms and content creation are becoming important economic sectors capable of absorbing large numbers of youth.

Representing the private sector, Alphonce Juma emphasized the importance of partnerships between businesses, government, and innovators to transform demographic potential into economic productivity. Through organizations such as Oracom Group, businesses are increasingly leveraging emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, and digital platforms to support communication, digital transformation, and innovation across sectors.

Oracom Group operates across areas such as digital media, technology solutions, communications, and innovation-driven services that support businesses, individuals, and organizations in navigating the modern digital economy. Maurice Otieno also highlighted the role of media in shaping public conversations and raising awareness around youth empowerment and national development.

Urbanization and Migration Challenges

Another major topic discussed during the forum was the impact of urbanization. As more young people migrate from rural areas to cities in search of employment, pressure on infrastructure, housing, and public services continues to increase.

Experts at the forum called for improved urban planning and regional development strategies to ensure cities grow in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

Building a Future Through Strategic Investment

Participants concluded that strategic investments in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation will be critical in enabling Kenya to fully benefit from its demographic transition.

Stakeholders also emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between government institutions, private companies, development partners, and civil society organizations.

As the forum closed, participants expressed optimism that continued dialogue and coordinated action could help Kenya transform its demographic changes into a powerful engine for economic growth and social progress.
